The Honda S2000 AP1 is one of the most sought-after JDM sports cars to import, combining a high-revving VTEC engine, rear-wheel drive and classic roadster proportions. Early AP1 models are becoming eligible for import into Australia once they meet the applicable 25-year age requirement, making Japanese-market examples increasingly accessible.

The S2000 was built on a dedicated roadster chassis developed specifically for the model — an uncommon approach for the era. Honda kept the formula focused: a lightweight, rear-wheel-drive platform, naturally aspirated F20C VTEC engine and a close-ratio 6-speed manual. The S2000 was only offered with a manual transmission, making it a true driver-focused sports car.

Competitive pricing in Japan makes the AP1 an appealing way into a genuine Honda performance icon. JDM examples can also feature desirable specifications such as factory double-DIN audio setups and limited Type V variants with unique factory equipment.

It is common to find Japanese S2000s with desirable options or tasteful enthusiast upgrades, including hardtops, sports mufflers, aftermarket wheels and coilovers.

With its dedicated chassis, high-revving VTEC engine, manual gearbox and unmistakable open-top design, the AP1 S2000 remains a compelling JDM import and one of the most exciting Japanese sports cars entering the 25-year-plus market.
