The Subaru Sambar KS3 and KS4 are classic Japanese kei trucks, combining tiny dimensions, practical utility and distinctive JDM character. They compete directly with the Honda Acty, Suzuki Carry and Daihatsu Hijet and are increasingly popular imports in Australia.
Powered by Subaru’s 658cc EN07 four-cylinder engine, the Sambar stands out with its rear-mounted engine, giving it a unique layout and excellent traction. Factory supercharged variants were available in both KS3 2WD and KS4 4WD, although these are now relatively rare and highly sought after by enthusiasts.
The KS3 is 2WD, while the KS4 features 4WD, making it well suited to rural, farm and recreational use. Despite their tiny footprint, the cab-over design provides a useful tray and exceptional manoeuvrability.
As Australia’s kei-truck scene grows, older Sambars are becoming increasingly sought after. Eligible examples may also qualify for club registration schemes in states such as Victoria, subject to applicable requirements.
