The Mazda Autozam AZ-1 PG6SA is one of Japan’s most distinctive kei sports cars, combining an ultra-lightweight body with gullwing doors and a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. Built under Mazda’s Autozam brand during Japan’s celebrated 1990s kei sports-car era, it remains one of the most unusual cars of its generation.

Its 660cc turbocharged three-cylinder engine is mounted behind the driver, contributing to a low centre of gravity and sharp, responsive handling. With its tiny dimensions and lightweight construction, the AZ-1 delivers an experience closer to a road-legal go-kart than a conventional sports car.

The AZ-1 was also sold as the Suzuki Cara, its mechanically identical sister model produced under Suzuki branding. Both versions are now rare, with the AZ-1 particularly sought after for its distinctive styling and limited production.

For Australian buyers, importing an Autozam AZ-1 from Japan offers the opportunity to own a genuinely rare JDM kei sports car with iconic gullwing doors, mid-engine dynamics and growing collector appeal.
