About Toyota Corolla Levin:
The Toyota Corolla Levin AE111 is the later-generation successor to the legendary AE86, retaining the famous Levin name while evolving into a lightweight 1990s performance coupe. With front-wheel drive, sharp styling and Toyota’s high-revving 4A-GE 20V Black Top, it has developed a strong enthusiast following of its own.
XZ — The more accessible 1.6L 4A-FE specification, aimed at everyday practicality and available with automatic or manual transmission depending on year.
BZ-V — Sporty 4A-GE 20V Black Top specification from the early AE111 range, offered with 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic before being replaced by the BZ-R in April 1997.
BZ-G — 4A-GE 20V Black Top model combining performance with more everyday equipment. Later cars received the 6-speed manual or 4-speed automatic.
BZ-R — The top performance grade, introduced with the April 1997 facelift, featuring 6-speed manual, Super Strut Suspension, LSD, upgraded brakes and ABS.
The 4A-GE 20V Black Top is the defining engine of the AE111 performance range, producing 165 PS at 7,800 rpm. It is the fifth-generation 20-valve 4A-GE, following the Silver Top used in the preceding AE101 generation.
With its lightweight chassis, high-revving engine and responsive FWD handling, the AE111 is a great way to get into fun JDM coupe performance on a budget. Certain specifications may suit P-platers in eligible Australian states, while qualifying examples may also be eligible for club-registration schemes.
Clean examples are increasingly sought after worldwide, making the AE111 an interesting and relatively affordable JDM coupe to import from Japan.
