About Honda CR-X del Sol (SiR / VTi / VTEC):

The Honda CR-X del Sol EG2 is the Japanese-market SiR version of Honda’s final CR-X generation, introduced in 1992 as a distinctive 2-seat open sports car combining coupe practicality with open-air driving. Honda developed the del Sol around its “open coupe” concept, with a removable hardtop and an optional TransTop electric retractable roof.

The EG2 is powered by the 1.6L B16A DOHC VTEC, producing 170 PS at 7,800 rpm. It features double-wishbone suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, 15-inch wheels and a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. A factory viscous-coupling LSD was also available as an option.

The TransTop was an optional extra, not standard equipment on every EG2. Cars fitted with it could electrically retract and store the removable hardtop behind the seats, while other EG2s retained the conventional manually removable roof.

The EG2’s appeal comes from its combination of high-revving VTEC performance, compact dimensions, double-wishbone suspension and open-top driving. With 170 PS from just 1.6 litres, the B16A gives the del Sol an energetic character while retaining the lightweight, mechanical feel associated with 1990s Honda performance.

The EG2 has developed a strong following among enthusiasts of 1990s Honda performance, particularly those drawn to the naturally aspirated VTEC era. For Australian buyers, the JDM EG2 remains an interesting import from Japan, particularly when found in original, well-preserved condition.

With the earliest examples now more than 25 years old, qualifying EG2s may also be eligible for Victoria’s Club Permit Scheme, subject to the applicable requirements.

The del Sol ultimately represents one of Honda’s more unusual interpretations of the lightweight sports car: small, high-revving, front-wheel drive and open-top, with the B16A-powered EG2 offering genuine performance alongside its distinctive character.
