About Honda Civic Type R:
Honda Civic Type R EP3 — High-Reving Performance in a Practical Hatchback
The Honda Civic Type R EP3 combines a naturally aspirated i-VTEC engine, a close-ratio manual gearbox and compact three-door hatchback styling. As the second-generation Civic Type R, it delivers an engaging driving experience while retaining the everyday usefulness of rear seats and a hatchback boot.
Built by Honda in the United Kingdom and exported to Japan, Japanese-market EP3 models feature a distinctive specification that makes them an appealing choice for Australian enthusiasts looking to import a Honda Civic Type R from Japan.
Engine and transmission
The Japanese-market EP3 Type R is powered by the 2.0-litre K20A naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine, producing 158kW (215PS) at 8,000rpm and 202Nm at 7,000rpm. Honda’s DOHC i-VTEC system combines variable valve lift with variable intake cam timing, giving the engine its responsive, high-revving character.
Every EP3 Type R features front-wheel drive and a six-speed manual transmission. The distinctive dashboard-mounted gear lever sits close to the steering wheel, making quick gear changes a memorable part of the driving experience.
Japanese-market models also feature a factory helical limited-slip differential, helping deliver power through the front wheels when accelerating out of corners. The engine is designed to run on premium unleaded petrol.
Variants to know
Japanese-market Type R — early models: The original EP3 specification combines the 215PS K20A engine with a six-speed manual, limited-slip differential, Recaro front bucket seats, a leather MOMO steering wheel, 17-inch alloy wheels and a prominent rear spoiler.
Japanese-market Type R — facelift models: Introduced in January 2004, the updated version features a revised front bumper, projector-style headlights, updated rear lights and red-and-black Recaro front seats. An engine immobiliser also became standard. The same K20A engine and six-speed manual remain central to its appeal.
Type R with C Package: A factory comfort package offered alongside the Type R specification. On facelift models, it includes automatic climate control, power windows, central locking, keyless entry, HID low-beam headlights, rear privacy glass, a rear wiper and electrically folding mirrors. It is a useful option for buyers planning regular road use.
The C Package is an equipment option, so it can overlap with early or facelift models. Individual vehicle specifications should be checked when choosing an example.
Japanese-market appeal
The Japanese-market EP3’s 215PS K20A engine and factory limited-slip differential are key attractions for buyers seeking this particular Type R specification. Championship White is closely associated with the model, while facelift C Package cars were also offered in Satin Silver Metallic.
Inside, supportive Recaro front seats and a four-seat layout give the EP3 a balance of sporting character and everyday flexibility. Its compact dimensions make it an appealing weekend car that can also handle regular commuting.
The Honda Civic Type R EP3 is a rewarding performance hatchback to import from Japan into Australia, combining high-revving Honda character, manual driving involvement and practical proportions. Fukasawa Car Imports can help source an example that suits your preferred styling, equipment and budget.
