About Honda S660:
Honda S660 JW5 — A Japanese Kei Sports Car with Plenty of Character
The Honda S660 is a Japanese kei sports car, combining a mid-mounted turbocharged engine, rear-wheel drive and a removable roof in a compact two-seat roadster. Kei cars are Japan’s smallest vehicle category, built within strict size and engine-capacity limits. The S660 makes the most of that compact format, offering distinctive styling, light weight and an engaging driving experience.
For Australian buyers looking to import a Honda sports car from Japan, the S660 offers an appealing choice for weekend drives and open-air motoring.
Australian import eligibility
Current import approvals support Honda S660 models built from January 2020 to March 2022 only. This makes the updated models the focus for Australian buyers. Fukasawa Car Imports can help confirm the build date and eligibility of an individual vehicle before purchase.
Engine and transmission
Every factory Honda S660 uses the 658cc S07A turbocharged three-cylinder engine, producing 47kW (64PS) and 104Nm. Mounted behind the seats, it drives the rear wheels and contributes to the car’s balanced handling.
The Alpha, Beta and regular Modulo X variants were available with either a six-speed manual or a CVT automatic. The CVT includes paddle shifters, a seven-step shift mode and Sport mode, while the manual offers a more hands-on driving experience. The final Modulo X Version Z was offered exclusively with the six-speed manual.
The S660’s appeal comes from its responsive chassis and compact proportions, making winding roads enjoyable without needing a large engine.
Variants to know
S660 Beta (β): The simpler specification, featuring fabric seats and the same turbocharged engine and rear-wheel-drive layout as the rest of the range. Available in manual and CVT automatic.
S660 Alpha (α): The more generously equipped mainstream variant. Updated 2020 models feature heated seats, Alcantara interior detailing and additional exterior lighting, making the Alpha an appealing balance of comfort and driving enjoyment. Available in manual and CVT automatic.
S660 Modulo X: A factory-built model featuring dedicated aerodynamic parts, five-stage adjustable dampers, upgraded brake components and an active rear spoiler. A distinctive Bordeaux-red-and-black interior adds to its appeal. Available in manual and CVT automatic.
S660 Modulo X Version Z: The final special edition, introduced in 2021. It combines the Modulo X’s chassis upgrades with black exterior detailing, exclusive interior finishes and Version Z identification. Offered in Sonic Grey Pearl or Premium Star White Pearl, exclusively with the six-speed manual.
Equipment and factory accessories vary between individual vehicles, providing a choice of specifications within the eligible build period.
Removable roof and updated styling
The S660 features a lightweight, manually removable fabric roll-top roof for open-air driving. A powered rear window provides another way to bring fresh air into the cabin. Storage space is limited, particularly when carrying the roof, so the S660 is best suited to travelling light.
The January 2020 update introduced revised grille and lighting details, new wheel designs and body-coloured front pillars, alongside cabin improvements.
The Honda S660 is an appealing kei sports car to import from Japan into Australia, offering compact dimensions, engaging handling and distinctive styling. Fukasawa Car Imports can help source an eligible example that suits your preferred transmission, colour, equipment and budget.
