The Toyota MR2 SW20 is one of Japan’s most iconic mid-engine sports cars and a popular choice for importing from Japan into Australia. Still relatively affordable, it offers a genuinely engaging two-seat driving experience, with a growing enthusiast scene and strong grassroots motorsport presence.

Built as a dedicated two-seat coupe, the MR2 places its engine behind the cabin and ahead of the rear axle, creating a unique midship layout and excellent balance. Combined with rear-wheel drive and compact dimensions, it makes the SW20 particularly rewarding on winding roads and track days.

The SW20 was offered in naturally aspirated and turbocharged forms. Turbo models are designated GT-S and feature Toyota’s 3S-GTE engine, while naturally aspirated variants provide a simpler and more accessible driving experience.

Buyers can choose between slicktop and T-bar/targa roof configurations, while the iconic pop-up headlights complete its classic JDM appearance.

With its mid-engine layout, two-seat configuration and strong motorsport following, the SW20 remains an exciting and relatively affordable Japanese sports car. Eligible examples can also qualify for club registration schemes in states such as Victoria, subject to applicable requirements.
