The Subaru Impreza GC8 is a defining icon of the 1990s JDM performance era — born from the golden age of rallying and the fierce rivalry between Japanese manufacturers. With 2.0-litre turbocharged EJ engines, AWD and a rally-developed chassis, the GC8 quickly became one of Subaru’s most recognisable performance cars.

WRX — The foundation: 2.0L turbo EJ20, AWD and classic rally-bred performance.

WRX STI — The enthusiast step-up, with upgraded drivetrain, suspension and brakes.

WRX STI Type RA — Lightweight and stripped back, with a stronger focus on competition.

WRX STI Type R — The coveted 2-door coupe, combining low weight with serious STI hardware.

The Type R models are particularly collectible, especially later examples, as Subaru continued refining the formula through the GC8’s production run.

GC8s are commonly imported from Japan into Australia, where condition plays a major role in value. Enthusiasts increasingly seek clean, original cars with less rust and strong overall condition, and the best examples can command a significant premium.
