About Honda Civic SiR:
The Honda Civic EG6 SiR is one of the defining Japanese performance hatchbacks of the 1990s, combining a lightweight chassis with Honda’s high-revving B16A DOHC VTEC. Its greatest appeal is how it blurs the boundary between an everyday car and a genuine performance machine — a practical hatchback that could deliver serious driver involvement without requiring a dedicated sports car. The Civic’s enormous popularity made the name familiar to almost everyone, helping bring attention to higher-performance versions such as the SiR and creating a broad enthusiast following.
Available in several factory variants:
The lower non-VTEC grades were primarily designed for everyday use, while the performance-focused SiR and SiR II received the B16A DOHC VTEC.
SiR — Performance specification equipped with the 1.6L B16A DOHC VTEC, producing 170 PS at 7,800 rpm in JDM specification and paired with a 5-speed manual.
SiR II — Higher-grade version retaining the same B16A VTEC powertrain while adding additional equipment and convenience features.
The EG6 also combined performance with genuine practicality, featuring a versatile hatchback interior and folding rear seats, with various factory interior and audio configurations available. This everyday usability was an important part of the Civic’s appeal: the same basic platform was familiar to ordinary drivers, yet the SiR transformed it into a serious enthusiast car.
The driving experience comes from the combination of low weight, compact dimensions, front-wheel drive and a high-revving B16A. Rather than relying on turbocharging or large displacement, Honda created a car that rewards the driver for exploring the upper reaches of the rev range.
The EG6 became deeply embedded in Japanese motorsport and car culture, while its appearance in Initial D and numerous racing and driving games helped introduce the car to generations of enthusiasts. Its lightweight chassis and B-series engine also made it an extremely popular platform for grassroots racing and tuning.
For Australian enthusiasts, the JDM EG6 SiR remains an attractive budget-friendly import from Japan, particularly for buyers looking for a lightweight classic Honda rather than a larger or more expensive performance car. Enthusiasts and collectors increasingly favour well-preserved, original examples, as heavily modified EG6s are far more common than untouched cars.
With the earliest examples now more than 25 years old, qualifying EG6s can also be eligible for Victoria’s Club Permit Scheme, subject to the applicable import, safety, vehicle-standard and club requirements.
The EG6 SiR ultimately represents a defining idea of 1990s Honda: performance without excess, practicality without sacrificing fun, and a mainstream hatchback capable of becoming a genuine enthusiast icon.
