About Porsche 911:
The Porsche 911 Type 964 is one of the most significant evolutions of the classic air-cooled 911. Produced from 1989 to 1994, the 964 introduced major engineering changes including the 3.6L air-cooled flat-six, ABS, power steering, coil-spring suspension and an automatically deploying rear spoiler. Around 85% of the car was newly developed, making the 964 a major step forward from the previous generation.
The 964 was offered with both manual and automatic transmissions, including Porsche’s early Tiptronic system. Popular for import into Australia variants include:
Right hand drive Carrera 2 — Rear-wheel drive and the traditional driver’s choice, available in Coupe, Targa and Cabriolet forms.
Right hand drive Carrera 4 — The first series-production 911 with all-wheel drive, using technology heavily influenced by Porsche’s development of the legendary 959.
Carrera RS — A lightweight, more focused derivative of the Carrera 2, with reduced weight, increased performance and a more aggressive chassis. Today, the RS is one of the most collectible 964 variants.
Japan remains an important source of 964s for Australian buyers. Both LHD and RHD examples can be found, with RHD cars generally more attractive to the Australian market and potentially commanding a premium depending on specification, originality and condition.
The 964 is now firmly within the classic-car category. In Victoria, vehicles more than 25 years old can be eligible for the Club Permit Scheme, subject to VicRoads requirements, approved club membership and the relevant safety/import requirements. Club permits provide limited-use registration of up to 45 or 90 days per year.
