About Nissan Silvia S14:

The Nissan Silvia S14 brought a wider stance and a more mature feel to the rear-wheel-drive Silvia. Built as a two-door coupe, it kept the responsive handling enthusiasts loved while giving buyers a choice of naturally aspirated and turbocharged 2.0-litre SR20 engines. Japanese-market cars were offered with five-speed manual and four-speed automatic transmissions.
The naturally aspirated SR20DE in the J’s and Q’s was rated at 160 PS. The turbocharged SR20DET in the K’s produced 220 PS. Manual turbo cars are particularly sought after, while the naturally aspirated grades offer plenty of S14 character and may suit P-platers in states where the specific car is approved. Buyers should check local rules and any modifications before purchase.
Zenki and Kouki
Zenki, 1993–1996 — The original S14, recognised by its softer, rounded front end. A clean Japanese-market Zenki with its original styling intact is an increasingly rare and desirable find, especially for buyers who prefer the early design.
Kouki, 1996–1998 — The facelifted S14, with a sharper front end, more angular headlights and revised rear styling. Its more aggressive appearance has made it a favourite among Silvia enthusiasts.
Zenki and Kouki describe when the car was built and how it looks. Both periods included naturally aspirated Q’s and turbocharged K’s models.
Variants to know
J’s — The simpler naturally aspirated S14, powered by the SR20DE.
Q’s — A more extensively equipped naturally aspirated Silvia. Q’s Type S and later Q’s Aero versions offer further choices in factory styling and equipment.
K’s — The turbocharged SR20DET model. Early K’s Type S cars and later K’s Aero versions appeal to buyers seeking a distinctive factory specification.
Some Japanese-market S14s were fitted with Nissan’s Super HICAS rear-steering system. These carry the CS14 chassis code; standard-steering cars use S14. The rear-steering code does not determine whether the engine is turbocharged.
With its choice of Zenki and Kouki styling, naturally aspirated and turbocharged variants, and manual and automatic transmissions, the Nissan Silvia S14 remains one of the most popular cars to import from Japan into Australia.
