About Nissan Skyline R34:

The Nissan Skyline R34 has become one of the most recognisable Japanese cars of its generation. Introduced in 1998, it brought sharper styling and a stiffer body to the Skyline’s familiar straight-six formula. The two-door coupe is the shape most buyers picture, but the four-door sedan offers much of the same character. The R34 GT-R (BNR34) is covered in a separate catalogue entry.

There is more to the R34 range than the turbo coupe. Nissan offered naturally aspirated and turbocharged rear-wheel-drive 2.5-litre cars under the ER34 chassis code, as well as the naturally aspirated, all-wheel-drive ENR34. The turbocharged RB25DET was the range’s performance engine, rated at 280 PS in the factory 25GT TURBO. Naturally aspirated cars used the RB25DE, while the ENR34 paired that engine with Nissan’s ATTESA E-TS all-wheel-drive system.

The main versions to look for are:

ER34 naturally aspirated sedan — A rear-wheel-drive, four-door 2.5-litre Skyline. Grades included the 25GT, the more generously equipped 25GT-X and the handling-focused 25GT-V.

ER34 naturally aspirated coupe — The rear-wheel-drive, two-door alternative. Nissan offered a 25GT coupe in the early range and added the 25GT-V coupe in 2000. Coupes usually attract a premium over comparable sedans.

ER34 turbo sedan — A four-door RB25DET Skyline. Early cars included both the 25GT TURBO and the more generously equipped 25GT-X TURBO. The latter grade was no longer listed in Nissan’s 2000 range.

ER34 turbo coupe — The two-door 25GT TURBO. Its combination of R34 coupe styling, rear-wheel drive and factory turbo power makes it one of the most desirable versions outside the GT-R lineup. Coupes usually fetch more than comparable turbo sedans.

ENR34 25GT FOUR sedan and coupe — Naturally aspirated 2.5-litre Skylines with all-wheel drive. The sedan range also included 25GT-X FOUR and 25GT FOUR L selection grades.

Five-speed manuals and four-speed automatics were offered across much of the R34 range, although availability depended on the grade, body style and year. Factory manual cars are now especially sought after by enthusiasts internationally and generally command a premium over comparable automatics. That makes the original transmission an important detail to confirm when sourcing a car from Japan.

What do GT, GT-X and GT-V mean?

These are factory grade names, rather than option packs that could be added to every R34. They are useful clues to a car’s specification, although the exact lineup changed during production.

GT was the separate 2.0-litre, rear-wheel-drive HR34 grade. 25GT identified a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre grade. The X grades placed more emphasis on equipment: Nissan sold a naturally aspirated 25GT-X sedan, a 25GT-X FOUR all-wheel-drive sedan and, early in production, a 25GT-X TURBO sedan.

25GT-V took a different approach. It kept the naturally aspirated 2.5-litre engine but added performance-oriented chassis equipment, including 17-inch wheels, opposed-piston brakes, electric Super HICAS four-wheel steering and a rear viscous limited-slip differential. It is an interesting choice for buyers who want the R34’s handling character without a turbo engine.

For Australian buyers sourcing a Skyline from Japan, this variety is a large part of the R34’s appeal. A factory manual turbo coupe may be the dream car, but a clean sedan, a 25GT-V or an all-wheel-drive ENR34 can each offer a distinct way into R34 ownership. Factory grade, original transmission, modifications and condition are worth assessing together when choosing an individual car.

These R34 models are now over 25 years old. In Victoria, an eligible car may be considered for normal registration or a club permit, subject to the applicable vehicle and owner requirements.
