The Toyota AE86 is one of the most iconic JDM cars ever made, becoming a global symbol of lightweight, rear-wheel-drive performance. Immortalised by Initial D and celebrated through decades of rally, circuit and drift culture, it has developed an enormous worldwide following and become a highly collectible Japanese classic.
The AE86 came in two versions:
Sprinter Trueno — The iconic version with retractable pop-up headlights.
Corolla Levin — The fixed-headlight counterpart, sharing the same chassis and drivetrain.
Both versions were offered in several trim levels, with the highly sought-after GT Apex among the most desirable specifications. It combined the 1.6-litre 4A-GE DOHC engine with upgraded equipment, while features such as an LSD were available as factory options.
Lightweight construction, a high-revving 4A-GE and balanced front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout made the AE86 a natural for spirited driving, drifting and motorsport.
Today, clean, original AE86s are highly collectible worldwide, with condition playing a major role in value. Genuine Japanese-market examples are increasingly sought after for import into Australia.
