About Mitsubishi Pajero Mini:
The Mitsubishi Pajero Mini takes the spirit of the full-size Pajero and packs it into a tiny kei-class 4WD package. First introduced in 1994, it quickly became one of Japan’s most recognisable compact off-roaders.
The first generation came in two main versions:
H51A — The 2WD/FR version, using the naturally aspirated 659cc 4A30 engine.
H56A — The 4WD version, equipped with Mitsubishi’s Easy Select 4WD system and available with both naturally aspirated and turbocharged engines. For buyers specifically looking for a mini 4WD SUV, the H56A is the model to look for.
For enthusiasts, the VR turbo is particularly appealing. It uses a 659cc 4A30 DOHC 20-valve intercooled turbo, producing 64 PS and 97 Nm, with a 5-speed manual or 3-speed automatic depending on specification. Naturally aspirated XR models offer a simpler alternative.
Despite its tiny dimensions, the Pajero Mini has genuine Mitsubishi 4WD hardware, a rugged SUV design and a surprisingly capable chassis. At just 3.3 metres long and 1.4 metres wide, it is exceptionally easy to drive and park while retaining the character of a proper little off-roader.
Today, these have become popular JDM imports for buyers looking for an affordable, budget-friendly mini 4WD SUV. The combination of kei-car size, low running costs, classic Japanese styling and genuine 4WD capability makes the H56A particularly appealing.
For Australian buyers, the Pajero Mini is a great car to order from Japan. Clean examples offer an affordable way into classic JDM 4WD ownership and make a fun second car, daily runabout or lightweight weekend adventure vehicle.
Small, capable and full of character — the H56A Pajero Mini is one of Japan’s best little 4WD imports.
