About Subaru WRX STI:

The Subaru WRX STI VAB brings together turbocharged boxer performance, a six-speed manual gearbox and all-wheel drive in a practical four-door sedan. For Australian enthusiasts, the Japanese-market model offers the appeal of Subaru’s 2.0-litre EJ20 engine, along with a choice of regular STI grades and distinctive limited editions.

The standard Japanese-market WRX STI and STI Type S produce 308 PS (227 kW) and 422 Nm. Subaru’s Driver’s Control Centre Differential, known as DCCD, lets the driver adjust the centre differential’s operation to suit road conditions and personal preference. Every Japanese-market VAB STI comes with a six-speed manual transmission, giving the range the engaging character that has made the STI name so well known.

Variants to know

WRX STI — The core model, combining the 308 PS EJ20 turbo engine, six-speed manual, DCCD all-wheel drive and Brembo brakes. It offers the essential STI driving experience with five seats and everyday sedan practicality.

WRX STI Type S — A higher specification version with the same engine output as the regular STI. Equipment varies by year: facelift Type S models feature 19-inch wheels, and optional RECARO front seats are worth looking for when comparing examples.

S207 — A special STI-developed model introduced in 2015, limited to 400 cars. Power rises to 328 PS, accompanied by dedicated suspension tuning, quicker steering and exclusive interior and exterior equipment. The NBR Challenge Package adds further details, including a carbon rear wing.

S208 — Introduced in 2017 and limited to 450 cars, the S208 produces 329 PS and features extensive STI upgrades to the engine, suspension and cabin. NBR Challenge Package versions add a dry-carbon roof and rear wing, making them particularly distinctive choices.

Type RA-R — A lighter, performance-focused special edition released in 2018, limited to 500 cars. It uses a 329 PS engine and weighs approximately 30 kg less than the S207 and S208, appealing to buyers who value a more focused driving experience.

EJ20 Final Edition — A farewell to Subaru’s EJ20 engine, limited to 555 cars. Based on the Type S, it features a specially balanced engine, gold 19-inch forged BBS wheels and exclusive trim. Its significance makes it an appealing choice for enthusiasts seeking one of the final Japanese-market EJ20 STIs.

Early and facelift models

The VAB received a major update in June 2017. Facelift cars gained revised front styling, improved interior details, updated electronic DCCD control and upgraded Brembo brakes with six-piston front and two-piston rear calipers. These changes give buyers useful differences to consider alongside mileage, condition and factory options.

The Subaru WRX STI VAB is listed on Australia’s SEVS register for the July 2014–December 2021 build-date range, covering STI variants fitted with the 2.0-litre turbocharged EJ20 engine. The individual vehicle must also meet the applicable import and compliance requirements.

For buyers looking to import a Subaru WRX STI from Japan into Australia, the VAB offers an appealing combination of performance, practicality and Japanese-market specification. From the regular STI to rare limited editions, Fukasawa Car Imports can help source a car that suits your preferences and budget.
